In past posts at this web site, I have documented Poland’s national program to swiftly upgrade its military forces, and either (A) prepare for a war with Russia or (B) deter such a war. I saw a documentary segment on a cable-TV news channel which shows how seriously Poland is about implementing their military preparedness program nationwide. That TV segment prompted this post.
The first link and second link are video news reports which document Poland’s decision to make military preparedness training mandatory for all Polish teenagers. This is a remarkable step, but Poland’s geography and Russia’s imperialism make it a logical one to implement. The firearms training is now being included in the curricula of Polish schools. The report I saw used AR-type rifles with laser sighting devices to report hits and misses at various targets. Personally, I think this is a reasonable, commendable program for Poland (or any nation near Russia) to implement into its civilian population. In the event Russia provokes a war via an invasion of Poland, Poland’s civilian population is being prepared now to quickly take up arms and repel an invader. These kinds of programs create a civilian reserve force in advance of any warfare, and eliminates the need for many “basic training” firearms familiarization in the event of a war.
Poland’s geography requires it to be on a heightened state of readiness. It was invaded by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II and Poland was oppressed by Soviet occupiers for decades after World War II. Poland has no desire to repeat such an experience. I think most people realize that Poland could be attacked from the east by Russia and Belarus (a vassal state of Russia). However, many do not realize the Russians threaten Poland from another direction as well. If you consult a map, you will see an enclave labelled “Kaliningrad” bordering Poland on its northern side. Kaliningrad is Russian territory which is physically separated from the rest of Russia even as Alaska and Hawaii are US states even though they have no physical connection with the USA. To attack Poland (or many other NATO nations). Russia could fire missiles and artillery rounds from Kaliningrad.
The USA and NATO have long recognized this danger to Poland and neighboring NATO nations. The USA constructed a sophisticated air defense system called Aegis Ashore which launches air defense missiles at incoming attacking missiles or warplanes. Indeed, because Russia could attack from the north and east simultaneously in the event Russia invades NATO these Aegis missiles must be ready to fire in either direction. Indeed, the Aegis system may also have to fire air-defense missiles toward the north if Russia fires missiles at Poland from Russian warships in the Baltic Sea. The third link, a post I wrote previously, documents many of Poland’s specific weapons purchases as it pursues military independence. Reports I have seen state that Poland is spending 5% of its national GDP on military expenditures. This is one of the highest percentages within NATO. While it is allied to other western nations via NATO, Poland clearly wants to defend itself successfully with its own military forces if it needs to do so. Slowly, the other European nations are waking up to the danger posed by Russia. Since Russia invaded Ukraine without any military provocation from Ukraine, what is to prevent Russia from doing the same thing to various NATO nations? The fourth link reports on a visit by the leaders of major European NATO powers to Ukraine to show their support for Ukraine’s independence and right to defend itself.
I can relate to the program which Poland is implementing to give firearms training to all Polish youth. When I was a 12 year-old boy growing up in South Dakota, I had reached the age where I could legally handle a shotgun and go hunting for pheasants. The idea that 12 year-olds can go traipsing through rural fields with loaded guns to shoot pheasants may disorient or alarm some urban readers. I loved it! It made me feel like a grown up. It should be mentioned that before 12 year-olds could legally go hunting with loaded guns, they had to complete a weapons training program (as in modern Poland). My weapons training program was conducted by certified NRA firearms instructors. That should not surprise modern readers, but what will surprise them is that this training was conducted in a study hall of the local public high school. We were trained to handle firearms safely, but we were also trained to be lethal with them (as in modern Poland). Can you imagine a public school hosting an NRA firearms training class for teens and pre-teens today? Can you imagine the sight of tables loaded with various types of shotguns and ammunition in a public school room? That was a normal sight in 1962 in South Dakota. After school, some students and teachers would open the trunks of their cars and compare shotguns–while on school property. No one was bothered. It was a different time.
Americans generally feel removed from the threats faced by other nations around the world. We have long depended on being separated from potential enemies by huge oceans. However, that affords little safety today. Russia and China could attack us out of the north by invading through Alaska and Northern Canada. Submarines from Russia and China could easily station themselves off our coasts and fire missiles at America’s military facilities and weapons-production factories as part of a surprise attack. Sleeper cells from our enemies (composed of military-age males allowed in by President Biden’s open borders policy) could suddenly activate and attack American infrastructures and people anywhere in the USA as part of a coordinated Pearl Harbor-type attack. Everywhere in the USA could potentially be “on the front lines” in any future surprise attack.
What many would be surprised to know is that the Bible’s prophecies warn that the USA and its allies will be attacked in just such a surprise strike at some point in the future. Ezekiel 38-39 is a prophecy which reveals two great global alliances which will be present on earth in the latter days when this age-ending world war breaks out. The prophecy warns this attack will be mainly launched from the north by Russia, China, Iran and their allies vs. the Western nations who apparently will have let their guard down. The theme of this prophecy is that the Russian-led alliance might well win that war of invasion vs the USA and NATO if it were not for Divine intervention that ends the war and begins the Millennial reign of the Messiah (Christians understand this to be the Return of Jesus Christ). Ezekiel 39:1-2 predict that 5/6ths of the invading force (and perhaps even the civilian populations of their nations) will be annihilated. The death totals will be unimaginable on both sides. Biblical prophecies in Joel, Zechariah, Revelation and other books add more prophetic details about this final, age-ending world war.
