I think readers will agree that it is about time for national leaders to make a decision regarding Iran’s nuclear weapons program. For years we have heard that Iran was “within months” of getting nuclear warheads, and such warnings are beginning to sound like a case of “crying wolf.” Either they are about to build nukes or they are not. There is no middle ground on this matter. Both Israel and the USA have often stated that they will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. Independent, international agencies have stated Iran is close to obtaining nuclear weapons capability.
It appears that Iran is, indeed, very close to obtaining nuclear weapons. There have reportedly been indirect talks between Iran and the USA, but nothing substantive has been achieved yet. It is my opinion that Iran is stalling for time to get their nuclear program finished before the USA and Israel launch a pre-emptive strike. If the USA and Israel are serious about preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, it is “fish or cut bait” time regarding what to do about it. Israel and the USA must make a decision to attack Iran’s nuclear sites or the clock will run out and Iran will announce to the world it has nukes and perhaps even do a sample detonation somewhere in its eastern desert region.
There is a precedent that both nations would be well-advised to remember. When North Korea was obviously beginning to develop nuclear weapons, there were consultations in the administrations of several US presidents about whether to launch a pre-emptive strike vs. North Korea to stop that program. The decision was made to not make such an attack, and it has proven to be one of the worst decisions ever made by US presidents. North Korea has constructed a major nuclear weapons capability and may already have deployed a strategic submarine with nuclear-tipped missiles. Imagine an Iran with the Iranian Mullahs eventually having a finger on Iranian nuclear weapons and deploying submarines with nuclear-tipped missiles! If no pre-emptive strike is made, future generations will wonder why Iran’s nuclear program wasn’t “nipped in the bud” so it could not develop and endanger the world.
In a case of perfect timing, the first link reports that a new, hitherto-unknown Iranian nuclear facility has been located. Iran has, no doubt, diversified and duplicated its nuclear program among many facilities. I suspect there are nuclear facilities that no one has found yet. One thing is certain. Iran has clearly stated its national goal of “wiping Israel off the map,” and I believe they are quite serious about that goal. Iran will likely use nukes against Israel as soon as they have the capacity to do so.
President Trump has just interjected his own views into the nuclear discussions by stating that Iran can either end its nuclear program (with American and outside help) or Iran can have its nuclear weapons program bombed out of existence. President Trump is not known as being a patient person. You may have noticed that the USA and the Houthis now have an understanding that the Houthis will no longer target American vessels with any weapons and the USA will stop bombing the Houthis (second link). Trump has stated the Houthis have “capitulated,” but there are crucial facts that are unclear in this American-Houthi agreement. Did the agreement mean the Houthis will no longer attack the merchant ships of the other NATO nations as well, or was the agreement a cease-fire applying only to American vessels? It is clear that Israeli ships are still subject to attack (third link).
The third link also reports the USA has bombed “1000 targets” in Houthi-controlled territory. How many more bombs and missiles does the USA have in its inventory? So many weapons have been shipped to Ukraine over the last few years that the expenditure of many more munitions vs. the Houthis has surely lowered the American weapons reserves even further. The American-Houthi detente has freed up US carrier groups to proceed to new locations for an attack vs Iran. If the USA does attack Iran, the most powerful ordnance to be dropped onto Iranian nuclear sites built into mountain-sides will have to come from deep penetrator bombs so heavy they can only be carried by B-1, B-2 or B-52 bombers flying in most likely from Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean. The fourth link, fifth link and sixth link offer varying perspectives on Trump’s ultimatum to Iran that it can dismantle its nuclear weapons program “nicely” or it can be done violently via a bombing campaign.
The seventh link reminds us that Israel is not a participant in the indirect American negotiations with Iran about that nation giving up its nuclear weapons program. .Even if the USA agrees to an Iranian nuclear disarmament program, Israel is not bound by that agreement. It is free to bomb Iran’s nuclear sites and it is likely to do so even if the Americans choose not to do so. In a post not long ago at this website, I detailed that the Trump administration released for shipment to Israel a large number of deep-penetrating bombs that Israel could obviously use against Iranian nuclear sites.
If they want to be taken seriously, it is time for Israel and the USA to stop “talking” and start “doing” something about the dangers posed by the Iranian nuclear program. President Trump would be well-advised to remember that while Iran regards Israel as the “Little Satan,” it regards the USA as the “Great Satan.” The USA is in the bulls-eye of Iran’s nuclear program along with Israel.
In my humble opinion, It is now time for action.
