There is a new military development within the NATO nations in Europe which is receiving far less media coverage than it deserves. These developments, in my opinion, will make NATO a stronger alliance. Since Sweden and Finland joined NATO, the Nordic NATO nations have drawn steadily closer in military efforts to deter or defeat a Russian attack. Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark have coordinated their air forces together, and they formed a Joint Nordic Command structure for their military forces. This “Nordic NATO” is a new development and it is driven greatly by Russia’s imperialist use of its military to try to subjugate Ukraine. The Nordic nations are Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Greenland, Iceland and the Baltic NATO nations are potential future members of a Nordic NATO subgroup within NATO.
I was surprised to see in the first link that the economies of the Nordic nations combined are nearly the same size as Russia’s economy. Each Nordic nation brings something to this new sub-alliance within NATO. Sweden has a strong weapons manufacturing base, and it can make its own modern warplanes, tanks and submarines. Finland has one of the largest artillery forces within NATO and it also can rapidly increase its army due to a military training program for its citizens. The first link states Finland can have 280,000 troops in the field within weeks of a mobilization order and it has 900,000 trained reservists which can also be called to duty. Finland can, therefore, have over a million soldiers in the field within a remarkably short time if necessary. People also tend to forget Russia invaded Finland in the 20th century and Finland essentially fought Russia to a draw in what came to be called “the Winter war.” Norway has a strategic location protecting NATO’s North Atlantic region and it also has naval capabilities. The first link also reports Norway will be strengthening its military and especially its navy. Norway is in an enviable position. Due to its oil-rich status, Norway has a huge sovereign wealth fund of well over a trillion dollars. This means Norway can fund a large military build-up without any need for borrowing money to do it. Denmark is in a weak condition. It urgently needs to build up its military. For example, Denmark has no artillery forces left as it gave all its artillery to Ukraine. The first link reports Denmark is going to increase its military spending by 70% over the next two years.
The second link focuses on Norway. That nation is now spending over 2% of its yearly GDP on its military and will increase it over 21% in 2025. Its main defense focus will be to build submarines to patrol the North Atlantic access points in case of a war with Russia. It is also reported that Estonia, a nation very threatened by Russia, has increased its defense spending to 5% of its GDP (third link). Altogether, the Nordic NATO nations are sending a strong signal that they intend to build a fighting force that can deter Russia or defeat it in a conventional war. Denmark has also indicated a willingness to host nuclear weapons on its soil as a deterrent vs. Russia.
Is the Nordic NATO subgroup an example of what the other NATO nations will also be doing? The first link opines that the Black Sea NATO nations could form their own NATO subgroup. Those nations would include Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece. Geographically, that makes sense, but Turkey’s trustworthiness within NATO is in doubt due to its activities in recent years. Other NATO subgroups are also possible. A “Central NATO” group could be formed which includes Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the Benelux nations. An “Eastern NATO” subgroup would include all the former members of the Warsaw Pact nations which joined NATO soon after they were freed from Soviet domination. (Poland is already a prime example of a nation preparing to deter or win a war). A “Mediterranean NATO” subgroup could consist of such nations as Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the Balkan region’s NATO nations and Israel would be a logical addition to that group if Israel ever joins NATO. Such an action would add another nuclear-armed nation to NATO’s ranks (I think few doubt Israel is a significant nuclear power already). The USA and Canada would logically be allied to any NATO subgroup.
Personally, I think having organized subgroups within NATO with their own command structures is an excellent idea. In the event of a Russian attack vs. NATO, Russia would surely target the central NATO command offices to paralyze NATO’s command and control capabilities. Each NATO subgroup could have secret command structures in hardened facilities that could take over command of NATO forces within its region even if Russia targeted NATO’s command offices in its first strike. I think it is evident that Russia’s attack vs. Ukraine has severely backfired. Not only has it severely weakened the Russian military forces and personnel, but it has motivated Finland and Sweden to join NATO and it is motivating all NATO nations to beef up their military forces. Russia’s willingness to import North Korean mercenaries in its war with Ukraine also raises the possibility that Russia could secretly try to move 100,000+ North Korean soldiers into Belarus for a surprise attacks westward into NATO territory. Now that the precedent has been set that North Koreans can be imported into a European war by Russia, NATO planners must consider that any future wars could involved large numbers of North Koreans acting, again, as Russian mercenaries.
We do not know how many wars may yet be fought before the epic, final war that ends our age as our planet transitions into the millennial age under Jesus Christ’s (the Messiah’s) rule. People are not ready for such an event yet, and few believe it will literally happen. I believe a prophesied final World War will occur at the very end of our age as is prophesied in Ezekiel 38-39, Joel 2, Revelation 19-20, etc. All the biblical prophecies involving the latter days are examined together in my free research report entitled, What Ezekiel 38-39 Reveal about a Future World War III. Modern events are unfolding in a manner consistently in harmony with biblical prophecies. Given the Bible’s accuracy revealed in that report as well as in my article, Are We Living in the Biblical Latter Days?, is it not advisable that you examine what the prophecies state will happen on the earth in the foreseeable future?
