No doubt, many readers are aware that a major meeting has occurred at the United Nations, and that many chiefs-of-state have assembled there and some are allowed to address the UN General Assembly. Among the national leaders deemed “worthy” of addressing the UN were Venezuela’s Chavez, Iran’s Ahmadinejad and Libya’s Qaddafy. Iran’s leader is an open “Holocaust denier,” and has stated he wants to “wipe Israel” off the map. Chavez hates America and has signed weapons agreements with Iran and Russia. Qaddafy is a “former” sponsor of terrorists.
When Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke, he commended the nations which either refused to attend Ahmadinejad’s speech or walked out while he spoke. Netanyahu then quite appropriately blasted the nations whose representatives sat and listened to Iran’s leader even though he has openly advocated the extermination of another UN member state. Netanyahu rebuked the complicit nations with these words: “To those who gave this Holocaust denier a hearing, I say on behalf of my people….Have you no shame? Have you no decency?” [See first link for full story.]
Unfortunately, many nations in the UN don’t have any capacity for shame or decency. The hypocrisy of the UN runs so deep that it can scarcely be described. As the first link also notes, the UN condemned the Israelis for their recent military offensive in Gaza. What did the UN have to say about the 100s or 1000s of missiles that Hamas fired into Israeli territory to provoke that Israeli response? Nothing. The UN’s silence about the provocative Hamas efforts to kill Israelis was deafening. Netanyahu also made a very significant declaration that “Israel would never make peace with Hamas” (see second link). This means that as long as Hamas controls Gaza, Gaza will not be a part of any “Palestinian State” that might be recognized by Israel in the future.
A former Israeli Deputy Defense Minister, Ephraim Sneh, also warned that if “serious sanctions” are not imposed by the world community on Iran, Israel “will be compelled to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.” I don’t think he was kidding. Some reports indicate that an attack could come sooner. We will have to wait and see, but at some point, Israel’s patience will surely run out. Israel has no choice. It must act to prevent someone who wants to exterminate Israel from obtaining nukes, and it has every right to do so.
The final link below is an excellent article from the Wall Street Journal (sent by a reader) which asserts that the weakness of the Obama administration in dealing with the Iranian threat may actually hasten an Israeli strike because the Israelis will see that neither the USA nor the “world community” will do anything to stop Iran from obtaining nukes. The article takes the Obama administration to task for “abdicating” its superpower responsibilities. I hope the foreign policy newbies in the Obama administration read this piece, and I recommend it to readers of this blog.
In conclusion I remind readers that Zechariah 12:3 foretells that God Himself will defend the latter day nation of Judah (the Israelis) even if “all the people of the earth are gathered together against it.” The modern “people of the earth” are represented at the UN, and they are consistently “against” the Israelis. I wonder if God had the modern, hypocritical UN in mind?
