Wired magazine has just revealed that the USSR designed and deployed an automated “Doomsday” system during the Cold War code-named “Perimeter” (or “Dead Hand”). It was a system which guaranteed that Soviet nuclear missiles would be launched against the USA even if the USSR and/or its leadership were eliminated. The details were revealed to Wired magazine by one of the ex-Soviet engineers who helped build the system.
The system was actually quite ingenious. You can read about it fully in the link below, but it utilized seismic and radiation sensors, and electronic “command” missiles which would launch and give automated “fire” orders to all surviving Russian missiles in the event the USA knocked out Russian command structures and all the top Russian leadership. This automated “Doomsday” system was actually activated by Russia back in 1985. Why should we be concerned today? Because it is still operative, kept active by Russia instead of the old USSR.
The story below reports that the USA also built “…versions of these technologies, deploying command missiles…[and]…seismic and radiation sensors…but the US never combined it all into a system of zombie retaliation.” Given that Russia kept this system secret for many years, one might also wonder if the USA really did build a similar system but has simply not acknowledged it? If the USSR had the technology to build this system over two decades ago, you can be sure the USA had the scientific “know-how” to do it as well. And if Russia could build it over two decades ago, one wonders what other nations now have the technology to build and deploy such a system today? China, Great Britain, France, Pakistan, India and Israel are all nuclear powers. Some of these nations surely have the technology to build similar systems. The Israelis would have a strong motivation to build such a system. Given the very small geographic size of their nation, the Israelis are very vulnerable to being annihilated in a nuclear “first strike” by any enemy nation. I’ll bet they could pre-program their “Doomsday” system to automatically fire their nuclear warheads at all nations the Israelis deemed to be their most likely enemies in the event of a nuclear strike vs. Israel. I can’t help but think that this is one more reason why the world should want the Iranian nuclear weapons program eliminated before Iran can launch just such a strike at the Israelis.
This makes me think of one more way that Matthew 24:21-22 could be fulfilled. Jesus Christ prophesied concerning the Great Tribulation at the end of this age that a time of unprecedented danger would occur. It will become so bad that “…except those days be shortened, there should no flesh be saved.” The words “no flesh” would seem to prophesy that not only mankind, but all animal species would go extinct as well (all animal species are “flesh” too). If there are several nations with automated “Doomsday” systems, this is one more way that “all flesh” could perish in a climactic World War III (which is prophesied to occur in Ezekiel 38-39 and Revelation 16 and 19).
