Having just seen this new Iranian threat on cable TV, I wanted to pass on this imminent Iranian threat to readers of this blog as soon as possible.
After the Biden administration reportedly put great pressure on Israel to launch a rather underwhelming attack on Iran in retaliation for Iran’s second direct attack on Israel, Israel did, in fact, launch a minimal strike on Iran which did not target any Iranian nuclear or energy targets. The world breathed a sigh of relief thinking the situation was defused. It may not be defused after all. Several news media stories are reporting that Iran’s Supreme Leader wants a third attack by Iran against Israel, and that he wants it to occur before election day in the USA. The first two links report specifics on this threat and the third offers many links on the story from a Google search.
According to one report, Iran threatens “unimaginable” damage to Israel from this possible third strike. Will it be another attack by Iranian missiles and drones? We do not know. However, it is reported that this possible new attack may be launched from Iranian-dominated territory in Iraq. This would give Israel a much shorter reaction time to shoot down any incoming projectiles, indicating that Iranian missiles and drones would have a better chance of penetrating Israel’s defenses.
Undoubtedly, the USA and many nations will be attempting behind the scenes to cause Iran to halt plans for a third strike versus Israel. They may be successful, but there is no certainty of that. If Iran launches another wave of direct attack against Israeli targets, I expect Israel will respond quickly with punishing attacks versus Iran’s energy and nuclear facilities. This may be what Iran actually wants! By threatening to attack before the US elections, it seems Iran thinks Donald Trump will be elected president. It that happens, Trump would surely invigorate the Abraham Accords process–bringing peace between Israel and a wider group of Sunni Arab nations. Iran very much wants to prevent that from happening. If Iran provokes Israel into a wider war with Iran which devastates Iran’s oil and nuclear sites, Iran can trumpet this to the Islamic world and invite all Islamic nations to join a “jihad” vs. Israel (ignoring the fact that Iran started it). Iran would hope to forestall the expansion of the Abraham Accords by such an action.
I stress that I am not predicting this action by Iran. Iran is very hard to predict. I am simply bringing this report to the attention of readers of this blog so you will not be taken by surprise if it does occur. If it happens, the current Mideast wars will likely escalate. If Donald Trump defeats Kamala Harris in the election, Iran will do everything it can to halt any expansion of the Abraham Accords before Trump takes office. A third attack by Iran against Israel would likely forward that agenda.
Since this Iranian threat is tied to the date of the US election, we don’t have long to wait to see if this was a real threat or not.
