The climate change convention sponsored by the climate activist crowd, called COP-29, has finally ground to an inglorious end. These conventions are heavily attended by rich people flying private jets to conferences who denounce developed nations for their high carbon footprints. Of course, the highest per capita carbon footprints belong to those very rich people who fly private planes to these climate conventions.
COP-29 began as a comedy show. The essence and purpose of these COP conventions is to blame all global warming on fossil fuels and mandate nations to abandon plentiful fossil fuels for undependable “green” energy projects. The convention was held in Baku, Azerbaijan and the president of Azerbaijan welcomed the delegates by declaring that fossil fuels are a “gift from God” (first link). That must have made some attendees apoplectic as that is not what the attendees wanted to hear, but Azerbaijan is an oil-exporting nation so the host nation’s leader simply stated a fact. Deuteronomy 8:9 tells us the Creator gave us iron and copper ores to use for manufacturing whatever we need. I’ll bet he also gave us fossil fuels as a blessing to power man’s manufacturing efforts.
I’m going to cite from several articles which I read in print versions of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (Strib), which I could not find on the internet or at that newspaper’s website. The COP crowd was divided into two groups in deep disagreement. The” poor developing” world wanted the “rich developed” nations to simply hand over $1.3 trillion (yes, trillion!) per year to the poorer nations. I admit I had to laugh when I read that amount for the first time. In a November 12, 2024 Strib article entitled, At UN Climate talks, real issue is money, the article stated that soon after the convention began, “it then turned to the main issue: money.” The article added, “the talks were more about the smell of money–in huge amounts.” This money is ostensibly intended to help poor nations reduce their fossil fuel use and lower their carbon footprints. An article dated November 15, 2024 in the Strib reported that global warming increases are going up faster than anticipated and that “people should wonder if the United Nations climate negotiations…are doing any good.”
The article also noted that China is the driving force behind fossil fuel usage. Some articles about COP-29 noted the absurdity that oil-rich Saudi Arabia and the immense economy of China are classified as “poor” nations so they would be recipients of this largess instead of logically being payers. The article closed with a comment that the Argentine delegation withdrew from the conference altogether and left for home. Other articles noted that Argentina’s President Milei didn’t bother to go to the conference; he went to Mar-A-Lago in Florida to meet with President-Elect Donald Trump. Both leaders have been called “climate skeptics,” and it is also reported that President Trump will withdraw from the entire Paris Accords that began these annual COP meetings. I agree with those analysts who think that the USA will remove itself from the Paris Accords and any future COP conventions after Trump becomes president.
The second link comments on a proposal by the developed nations to pay $200B per year to the developing nations while the third link mentions a $300B number. The third link notes that President-Elect Trump has called climate change a “hoax” and is not likely to give the developing nations any money for climate change purposes. The fourth link states the insatiably-demanding financial appetites of the developing nations reveal them to be “greedy little grifters.” Some reports have stated that the final tentative amount agreed upon is near $350B. It is unclear who will decide which nation gets how big a share of this freebie money to be doled out by the developed nations. It is also unclear which developed nations will give what part of that $300-350B freebie money. I do think it is clear the USA will give zero dollars. Even in the highly-unlikely event that the incoming Republican US Congress authorized any money for this dubious purpose, it is almost certain that Trump would veto it. My advice to the climate activists is “don’t hold your breathe” waiting for any of this free money to materialize. The developed nations are floating on an ocean of debt and would likely have to borrow any of the money given to the “grifter” nations. The kleptocratic class in the developing world will likely have a long wait before they receive any of this “free money.”
If there was any real devotion to stopping climate change effects, the COP-29 conference would have focused on realistic solutions to help combat man-made production of greenhouse gases and how to help island nations which may be threatened by rising ocean levels. There is no need for a wholesale shift to uncertain electric vehicle technologies. The developed nations could upgrade the technologies involved with smokestack emissions and modernize the catalytic converter technology in gas-powered vehicles to vastly reduce the greenhouse gases caused by fossil fueled usages. If there really was any threat to the existence of oceanic nations due to rising sea levels, any monies directed to such nations should pay for relocation of their populations to nations not endangered by sea-level rises. If the oceans were really rising dramatically, there is no saving low-lying oceanic nations. The only possible solution would be relocation efforts as you can’t build walls around entire island nations to counter rising sea levels (if they existed). I didn’t hear of any discussions about any such practical steps coming out of the COP-29 convention. The real purpose of the COP conventions is to enable developing nations to use climate change projections to coerce the developed world into giving freebie money to developing nations. I don’t think that’s going to work.
There is another reason why the freebie money may never get appropriated. I’ve written a pair of posts in 2022 and 2023 about the huge eruption of a water volcano in the Tonga region of the South Pacific in early 2022 (fifth link). Real scientists and climatologists warned that this record eruption hurled so much water vapor into the upper atmosphere that it will cause a global rise in temperatures of approximately 1.5 degrees for years to come. I didn’t hear any discussion about the real science concerning this super volcano at the COP-29 convention. We need to face that mankind’s collective efforts don’t really have as much impact on the earth’s climate as the climate activists want us to believe. By ignoring the obvious reality that natural events involving the earth itself have a far greater effect on global climate changes than mankind’s activities, the climate activists lose all credibility.
Clearly, there is a very real immortal Creator who made the earth, the sun and all heavenly bodies as well as all life forms on earth (Genesis 1, Job 38:1-11). We humans are merely his guests on this earth for a very limited period of time. The dynamic forces and cycles created in the actions and movements of the earth, sun, moon, etc. affect global climate more than man’s collective efforts and/or misdeeds.
In closing, I suggest an alternate approach for the COP-30 delegates who will attend that convention in Brazil next year. I suggest that they pass a resolution ordering the earth to not allow any more underwater volcanoes to occur. That would hold back global temperature increases more than anything mankind will do or not do. Let them see how much good passing such a resolution will do. Such a resolution is farcical, of course, but so is much of what already happens at these COP conventions. These climate conventions are held for headlines and photo ops, not for any actions that are realistic or which would really matter.
